Recycled Yarns

Slow Fashion - a term from the fashion industry - has now reached the world of knitting. What could be more sustainable than re-using and upclying what has already been produced? This is why we have decided to introduce a new line of recycled yarns to our range. Since the starting material - whether cotton, wool or cashmere - has to be shredded for this process, some kind of carrier has to be added. This can either be made from the same non-recycled material, e.g. premium cashmere mixed with recycled cashmere, or with a polyester content, which in our case is made from recycled PET bottles.

Recycling garments is an entirely mechanical process without the use of dyes, chemicals and using very little water. By recycling such discarded post-consumer textiles, we can save on the following:

  • Land: Valuable land is saved by removing textiles from landfill and also from the growing of virgin fibers. These areas can be used for more important sectors like agriculture.
  • Water: There is very little need of any water resources in production of the mechanically recycled fibers yarns, while for example the production of 1kg of premium cotton requires up to 11,000 litres of water.
  • Electricity: Recycled fibers / yarns consume a lot less energy compared to virgin fibers.
  • Green House Gases (GHG’s): These are emitted during the production process of virgin textiles and polyester fibers. By recycling textiles we also save on the GHG emissions caused during the biodegradation of discarded textiles.
